Latvian speaker on visit to Moldova

Chisinau, 28 February /MOLDPRES/- Speaker of Latvia Ināra Mūrniece began visit to Moldova today at the invitation of Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu. The Latvian delegation will attend a high-level interparliamentary conference entitled: “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and current security challenges”, organized on 2 March, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The official is in Moldova on 28 February-3 March and will have meetings with Candu, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Iurie Leanca, EU senior advisers from Latvia and representatives of Latvian diaspora, Honorary Consul of Latvia in Moldova etc.

The official will approach “providing a response to misinformation”, in panel I of the above-mentioned conference.

The participants in the event will debate issues related to misinformation, information security, energy and common challenges, economic growth and rule of law in the Eastern Partnership. The event is organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council at the initiative of Moldovan Speaker, Speaker of Georgia and of Ukraine. The three speakers join their efforts to promote common defense and security policies.

Representatives of the parliaments in the area, as well as the US Congress, MEPs confirmed their participation in the first high-level inter-parliamentary security conference. Also, the participation has been confirmed by notable experts such as Atlantic Council Executive Vice President Damon Wilson, Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, Eurasia Center Director John Herbst, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Associate Director RUSI, Jonathan Eyal, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, other international and regional experts.

Diplomatic relations between Moldova and Latvia were established on 1 September 1992. The last visit to Chisinau by Latvian Speaker took place in May 2014.
