Georgian speaker to attend high-level interparliamentary conference on security

Chisinau, 1 March /MOLDPRES/- In the morning, Parliament Speaker Andrian Canu met Georgian Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze. The Georgian delegation will attend a high-level interparliamentary conference “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and current security challenges”, due tomorrow in Chisinau, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

Candu welcomed the guests and thanked for the joint organization of the first high-level event on regional security issues.

The conference organized in partnership with the Atlantic Council at the initiative of the speakers of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine will debate issues related to information security, energy, defense and approach sustainable economic growth and rule of law in the region. The event will bring together about 150 high-level officials and experts, including speakers, MEPs, US Congress representatives, notable international and regional experts.

The three speakers join their efforts to promote common defense and security policies.

Representatives of the parliaments in the area and the US Congress, MEPs, confirmed the participation in the first high-level interparliamentary conference on security issues “Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine: Eastern Partnership and current security challenges”, held in Chisinau. Also, the participation was confirmed by notable experts such as – Atlantic Council Vice President Damon Wilson,  Anders Aslund, Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, Eurasia Center Director John Herbst, Ambassador Asif Chaudhry, Associate Director RUSI, Jonathan Eyal, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, former deputy secretary-general of NATO, other international and regional experts.

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Georgia were set on 25 June 1992. In April 2014, for the first time, the official visit by Georgian Speaker was paid to Chisinau. In July 2017, Speakers of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine asked the European parliament to adopt a resolution to open the accession perspective on the three associated countries in order to accelerate progress and democratic transformation.
