Moldovan government to pay from reserve fund to defend itself in litigation with offshore company claiming 27 million dollars

Chisinau, 18 April /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers today ruled to allocate, from the government’s reserve fund, 243,000 dollars to pay the law firms due to defend Moldova’s interests in a litigation with Gater Assets Limited, which claims debts worth 27.4 million dollars.

Those three law firms will represent Moldova in a pending action at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York city.

It is about an older litigation, from 1997, when the Moldovan company Gazsnabtranzit purchased from Gazprom almost 1.3 billion cubic metres of gas and paid it partially. Afterwards, the debts switched from one firm to another and eventually, in 2016, the firm Gater Assets Limited from the British Virgin Islands, represented by Alexey Olshanskiy, submitted an application to a federal judge from New York, with the sum of claims reaching 26 million dollars. On 26 January 2017, the court ruled to oblige Moldova to pay a sum of 27.4 million dollars.

The fees for representation in court will be paid to the office of the lawyer Vladimir Iurkovscki, in cooperation with the law firm Schoenherr Rechsanwaite GmbH and in partnership with Chaffetz Lindsey LLP (Chaffetz), under the legal assistance contract.

The same law firm in 2017 received about 170,000 dollars to defend Moldova in the same litigation.
