Chisinau, 20 April /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament adopted the code of audiovisual media services of Moldova in the first reading today. The document was backed with the votes of the majority of the lawmakers present in the session hall.

The new regulations see that the present audiovisual code is to be called the code of audiovisual media services of Moldova.

During the draft’s presentation, MP Corneliu Mihalache said that the document adjusted the national audiovisual legislation to the European legislation.

“When working out the regulations, the experience of more European states was taken into consideration. The draft provides for new regulations on principles of audiovisual communication, on the basis of which all providers of media services should work. The regulations also regard linear and non-linear media services, provided by all suppliers, stipulations for public, community providers of services and media services distributors. Also, the document contains provisions on the audiovisual commercial communications and the regulatory authority in the audiovisual sector,” Mihalache noted.

The draft was criticized by representatives of the opposition parties. The lawmakers said that the draft would not be efficient and would not meet the realities of Moldova.

Also today, the parliament adopted the national concept of development of mass media from Moldova. So far, the country has not had a general vision on the way mass media is to develop. The document is set to be a reference point for coherent public policies in the mass media sector. The concept’s enforcement will need financial resources from the public budgets, private investors and development partners, especially to back the regional and local media.

Parliament members and representatives of media institutions, international institutions and media NGOs participated in the working out of the documents. The working group was created in June 2017, at an initiative by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, with the support of the Joint Project of the European Union and Council of Europe, Promoting Media Freedom and Pluralism in Moldova.
