European town inaugurated in central – western city of Moldova

Chisinau, 20 May /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, accompanied by European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, and EU Ambassador to Moldova, Peter Michalko, inaugurated the European Town in Ungheni today. The officials visited tents of state institutions, projects made by the EU in Moldova and domestic producers that developed their business by support of EU.

According to the government’s communication and protocol department, PM pointed out that Ungheni is a truly European city and "a capital of European projects" in terms of infrastructure. Pavel Filip mentioned Court building in Ungheni, gas pipeline Iasi – Ungheni, interconnection of power systems, construction of bridges, new pilot projects for developing regions Ungheni and Cahul.

"These projects will make connections stronger, so that Moldova is irreversibly connected to EU. This is purpose of Government I have the honour to lead: European path become irreversible for us until the end of the mandate," said Pavel Filip.

The Head of the Executive expressed gratitude for EU support and specified that there is still a great potential for regional development, which Moldova needs to capitalise on.

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy stressed that EU is providing significant assistance to Ungheni district because it is border region of EU. "Today, seven embassies of EU Member States are present in Ungheni and about 15 projects provide EU assistance and support for development of Moldova," said Corina Cretu. Among successful projects, there were revealed Academy of Business Women, budget support programme on Free Trade and Deep Comprehensive Area, more than one hundred investment in European Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development and financing construction of the roundabout to Ungheni.

"EU wants to do even more, new investments of €4 million are planned to improve water supply and sewerage services and modernise high school Mihai Eminescu. I invite everyone to look with confidence and openness towards EU and take together this responsibility to help Moldova continue its European path," said Corina Cretu.

The European town in Ungheni provided visitors with opportunity to get info about EU – supported development projects in our country, know cultural diversity and European cuisine. The event also included language lessons, film screenings and musical performances.
