Moldovan parliament approves Ombudsman's report for 2017

Chisinau, 24 May /MOLDPRES/ – The report of Ombudsman, Mihail Cotorobai, on observance of human rights and freedoms in Moldova in 2017, heard in plenary session of 11 May, it was adopted with the vote of majority of MPs today.

In the report, Ombudsman, Mihai Cotorobai, has reported several human rights violations including access to justice, right to a fair trial, freedom of speech and right to healthcare.

According to Ombudsman, over recent two years, most of addresses examined are related to act of justice, including individual freedom and personal safety in detention, excessive use of preventive arrest, delaying examination of case by postponing trials and non – observance of reasonable time to judge cases. Other human rights violations include healthcare and social care for certain categories of citizens, right to a healthy environment and protection of work.

For first time, the report structure contains a separate chapter dedicated to corruption as most serious human rights violation.

According to legislation in force, Ombudsman presents to the Parliament an annual report on respecting human rights and freedoms in Moldova.
