The general mayor elected following the runoff will exercise his powers till the local general polls due in June 2019. The Electoral Code sees that the candidate getting the largest number of votes, no matter the number of electors who took part in the polls, is considered to be elected. If the two candidates pick up an equal number of suffrages, the candidate who got more votes at the first round of the polls is regarded elected.

Following the new local polls from 20 May 2018, two candidates remained to compete for the runoff: the candidate on behalf of the Political Party, Party of Socialists of Moldova, Ion Ceban, who picked up 40.97 per cent of the votes, and the candidate on the behalf of the Dignity and Truth Platform Political Party, Andrei Nastase, who got 32.12 per cent of the votes.
