Chisinau, 18 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Sculeni border checkpoint starts being reconstructed today, but remains functional. Following the reconstruction, its processing capacity will be doubled.

Director of the Customs Service Vitalie Vrabie today paid a visit to Sculeni, to consider, along with the checkpoint’s designers and employees, the way the customs control will be organized in the conditions of a capital reconstruction of the customs checkpoint.

”Presently, we have the biggest infrastructure restrictions in Sculeni. After the reconstruction, both on the direction of exit from Moldova and entrance into the country, we will have by three lanes for touring cars and by one for buses. While Palanca will be the most modern post at the border with Ukraine, then Sculeni will be at the border with Romania,” Vrabie said.

Under the project, after the reconstruction, the territory of the post will be extended by 1.3 hectares, which will make possible the supplementing of the control tracks and re-arranging infrastructure elements.

The extension and modernization of the Sculeni customs checkpoint is provided for in a project on restoration of the checkpoints on the Moldovan-Romanian border segment Sculeni-Sculeni, Leuseni-Albita and Giurgiulesti-Galati. The project is to be implemented within the Joint Operational Programme Romania – Moldova 2014-2020, financed by the European Union. The project’s budget is ten million euros, of which five million is meant for Moldova.

Statistics by the Customs Service shows that, at present, the Sculeni checkpoint records the highest traffic values; it is crossed by about 2,000 transport units daily, of which up to 350 are lorries.
