Notifications for code of audiovisual media services submitted to Moldovan parliament

Chisinau, 20 June /MOLDPRES/ - The notifications for the code of audiovisual media services have been submitted to parliament. Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today made statements to this effect at a meeting of the working group for improving the mass media legislation, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.  

The notification of the OSCE Office on Freedom of the Media, Council of Europe and Freedom House contain certain recommendations due to be considered on the platform of the parliament’s culture, education, research, youth, sport and mass media commission.   

The new code was elaborated by a working group made up of professionals in the media sector, specialized experts and NGOs. The parliament speaker promoted the draft in parliament, according to a public commitment taken at the creation of the working group for the improvement of the media legislation.   

The draft is set to adjust the national regulations to the Directive of the European Union and European Council. The document was subjected to discussions and approved in the first reading in parliament. Till consideration in the final reading, the draft was submitted for notification to OSCE, Council of Europe, EU and Freedom House.

The working group for the improvement of the media legislation represents a platform of communication and a mechanism of permanent cooperation between the parliament and representatives of media institutions, international institutions and media NGOs. The group was created in June 2017, at an initiative by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, with the support of the European Union’s and Council of Europe’s Joint Project, Promoting Media Freedom and Pluralism in Moldova. The technical assistance is provided to the group’s members by Freedom House, Internews and the U.S. Embassy in Moldova.
