Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ – The approach of Government to UN General Assembly is a premiere for contemporary history of Moldova and demonstrates political courage and unfeigned will to ensure real sovereignty of our state over national territory. The statement was made by Vlad Darie, former presidential adviser (1991 – 1993) and MP in Parliament of Moldova (1990 – 1994).

According to former MP, UN resolution on "The complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova" is a remarkable success that has demonstrated to the world that Moldova is not a Moscow vassal but a state that has real aspirations towards independence and freedom.

"The separatist conflicts were also planned by the Soviet Union. The events evolution of late 1980s had demonstrated that an implosion of the USSR is eminent, and separatist regions were designed to stop proclaiming independence of the Soviet republics. After collapse of the USSR, Russia took over the scenarios and used them to keep new independent states under its influence. All governments of Moldova have so far sought compromises with Moscow, believing that they will solve the problem of Transnistrian separatism. It was naive. The Kozak Plan has proven to full extent of real goals of Russia: total political control and permanent military presence on territory of Moldova," commented Darie.

The former MP noted that while opposition has repeatedly asked governments to use UN General Assembly mechanism, none other government has ventured to do so. "The appeal of Filip government is a premiere for contemporary history of Moldova and demonstrates political courage and unfeigned will to ensure real sovereignty of our state over national territory. The decision of UN General Assembly, unlike Security Council (where Russia has the right to veto), is not legally binding in real terms but carry a strong political and moral charge. From now on, Moldova can use this important decision in various international institutions and courts in collective and bilateral negotiations. The UN resolution is an appeal to our national dignity," specified Vlad Darie.

On 22 June 2018, in New York, the UN General Assembly approved by a majority vote the draft resolution on "The complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova". The document was supported by 64 states, including EU countries. Against it, there voted Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Belarus, while China and Iran – abstained.

The initiative on complete and unconditional withdrawal of foreign military forces from territory of Moldova was formulated by Prime Minister Pavel Filip in his speech delivered at tribune of UN General Assembly on 22 September 2017.
