Authorities of southern Gagauz-Yeri autonomy declare 30 September mourning day to pay homage to first governor of autonomy

Chisinau, 30 September /MOLDPRES/ - Mourning day was declared in the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri today, to pay homage to the first governor of the autonomy, Stepan Topal, who will be buried in the Comrat cemetery on 30 September.

According to the press service of the region’s administration, the autonomy’s executive body assumed the expenses for the funerals and the former Gagauz leader will be paid the last respects by the Guard of Honour.

Stepan Topal (born on 8 January 1938 – died on 29 September 2018) was a Gagauz political figure from Moldova, who held the office of governor (bashkan) of the autonomy on the period 1990-1995.  

In the last years, Stepan Topal has suffered from an incurable disease; yet, he continued his civic activity in the UTA Gagauz-Yeri. In last May, Topal was awarded the Order of the Republic.
