Chisinau, 22 October /MOLDPRES/- Chess schools in Ribnita and Rezina have been upgraded thanks to the Chess without borders project, implemented by the Chess Federation of Moldova, with the support of the European Union.

The European Union's investment in this project is estimated at 110,000 euros and was provided under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Program Support to Confidence Building Measures.

“I congratulate you for choosing to play chess. Chess is not just a fun game, it is also an excellent exercise to help your brain develop and cultivate a number of other important skills that will help you later in life," UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for Moldova Stefan Liller said.

Both schools have been repaired, equipped with furniture, equipment and handbooks. They are also accessible for people with special needs. Chess lessons are free, and coaches have received specialized training.

"It is a unique project and we are glad to have benefited from European support to achieve it. I am sure that through common competitions we will increase confidence between the two banks of the Dniestre,” the representative of the Chess Federation of Moldova, Serghei Bargan, said.

Chess schools in Rezina and Ribnita are among the 80 renovated infrastructure objectives through the Support to confidence-building measures programme. The programme builds trust between people on both banks of the Dniestre by involving local leaders in joint projects.
