Chisinau, 30 October /MOLDPRES/ - The first centre for stray dogs was inaugurated in the Moldovan capital today. The centre will provide services of sterilization of stray dogs and is set on the territory of Chisinau-based necropolis.

According to the Chisinau city hall, a veterinary office is arranged at the centre of sterilization of stray dogs, were services of sterilization and post-operation care are provided (3-7 days). Thus, the animals caught in streets or brought by volunteers are sterilized, are kept in lofts under supervision on the post-operation period and then set free. The centre’s overall capacity is of 50-70 animals per week.

At the event, the Chisinau acting general mayor, Ruslan Codreanu, said that the goal of the city hall was to cut the number of stray dogs through sterilization. “On the next six months, we want to sterilize about 1,000 dogs and for the next year, we plan to extend the veterinary office, endow it with high-tech equipment and create an electronic register of animals,” Codreanu said.

At the same time, the Chisinau acting mayor urged the citizens, volunteers and NGOs to actively get involved both in the process of animals’ sterilization and in information campaigns on the settlement of the problem of stray dogs.

According to the municipal authorities, the first dog sterilized at the veterinary office will be brought to the city hall’s yard for guard. This gesture is aimed at encouraging citizens to adopt sterilized animals.

For his part, the head of the Autosalubritate municipal administration, Eugen Axentiev, said that the service of hunting and flaying of stray dogs had been created with the arrangement of the centre. The service was endowed with the first unity specialized in catching and carrying stray dogs. The city hall will have five vehicles of this kind in all.

The Chisinau city hall earmarked about 400,000 lei for the opening of the centre and taking care of stray dogs.
