Electoral legislation to be amended in Moldova

Chisinau, 08 November /MOLDPRES/ – The election agitation in the polling station or within 100 metres of polling station on election day could be forbidden. A draft law was adopted in first reading by Parliament today.

According to the project, Art. 52 paragraph (10) of the Election Code (CE), which excludes the day of silence, and on election day no electoral agitation will be allowed within the polling station or within 100 metres of the polling station.

Also, the new regulations stipulate that on the day of voting, the persons which will make electoral agitation within the polling station or in the range of 100 metres will be sanctioned with fines of MDL 300 – MDL 600. For the persons with responsibility or for the electoral candidates the fines will vary between MDL 1200 – MDL 1500.

The draft was drafted following the recommendations of the Commission of legal issues, appointments and immunities, which on 31 October 2018 approved the Report on analysis, examination and evaluation of electoral legislation which underpinned the invalidation of new local elections in Chisinau.
