Tiraspol former leader sentenced to 16 years in prison

Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/- The alleged supreme court in Tiraspol yesterday sentenced former president of Transnistria Yevgeny Shevchuk to 16 years in prison and fined him about 36 million dollars.

According to the investigation, in 2015 Shevchuk and former members of the government in Tiraspol took "decisions contrary to law on the illegal detention of about 30% of wage and pension funds".

"Shevchuk was declared guilty of all the criminal charges he was accused of," Alexandr Storojuc, head of the so-called Prosecutor's Office, told Tiraspol press.

Court deprived Shevchuk of all distinctions, with a ban on taking office in the next five years after the punishment.

The sentence was announced in his absence. He did not acknowledge his blame and said he had to leave Tiraspol because of an attack that would be prepared for him. According to media in Chisinau, Tiraspol former leader is in Russia.
