Chisinau, 7 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Old-style Christians mark the Birth of God today.

On this occasion, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova, Most Right Reverend Vladimir addressed a congratulatory message to the Christians, in which he said that “the truth of the Lord must be announced from generation to generation, especially in our society, which is more and more often facing the temptation to regard Him (God) as out-of-date and discordant for the modern civilization.”

„Being blessed by the Lord to continue the itinerary of the life and the way of our enhancement in Christ, I wish: wisdom and fear of God to the country’s leaders; patience and perseverance to our fellow countrymen who left abroad and spiritual peace and light, happiness and nice fulfillments to all our Christians!” reads the pastoral letter by Most Right Reverend Vladimir.

There is a custom for the Christmas Eve to be waited with bread. Housewives are baking special Christmas fancy breads in the shape of the figure eight. These breads are hanged with basil at icons and are kept there till the holiday of St. George (6 May), when they are taken out and are given to animals, so that they guard them from evil. Children sing Christmas carols on this day.

Christmas is one of the twelve feasts of the Christian year and is preceded by a fasting period of 40 days.
