First case of measles in 2019 recorded in Chisinau

Chisinau, 21 January /MOLDPRES/ – The first case of measles in 2019 was registered by specialists from the National Agency for Public Healthcare (ANSP) at a child from Chisinau municipality.

Interviewed by agency, the head of the ANSP's information and communication service, Olesea Croitor, said that measles was confirmed in lab on 14 January to a child in Chisinau recently returned from a trip to Ukraine. The minor benefited from treatment.

According to ANSP's data, las year, there were 341 confirmed cases of measles. A significant increase in the number of illnesses was recorded in August, with 239 confirmed cases reported. Also, during October – nine cases of it.

The territory affected by measles from 01 August till present is: Ceadar – Lunga – 164 cases, Vulcanesti and Soroca – 35, Drochia – 21, Ungheni – 20, Chisinau – 18, Taraclia – 12, Cahul and Cantemir – Ocnita – 7, Nisporeni – 4, Glodeni – 3, Hancesti, Riscani and Tiraspol – 1 case.

There is also a Yellow Code on the risk of measles spreading throughout Moldova.

Within recent ten years, the immunisation rate in Moldova was 95 per cent, and now it is up to 87 per cent. The measles outbreaks also exist in neighbouring Ukraine and Romania.

The epidemiologists remind population that measles is a highly contagious disease and is spreading rapidly. The first sign of the infection is the high fever, which lasts for 01 – 07 days. The generalized eruptions occur 03 – 04 days after the onset of fever. The pneumonia is the most common cause of death in measles.

The measles can only be prevented by vaccination. In Moldova, vaccination is carried out with measles, mumps and rubella (ROR) combined vaccine at one year, 6-7 years, 14-15 years of age. The vaccination is free of charge for all eligible persons.
