Chisinau, 1 February /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union attaches an increased importance to the organization of free, fair and transparent elections in Moldova. High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini made statements to this effect at a joint news conference with Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu in Bucharest today.

According to the AGERPRES news agency, the Brussels official stressed that not only the European Union, but also the partner organizations, such as the Council of Europe and OSCE, attach absolute importance to the organization of free, correct and transparent polls. “This is our compass and this we constantly discuss with our partners, not only from the Eastern Europe, but from everywhere in the world. I will not go further with the discussions on politics in Moldova. A golden rule we have, especially when it comes to the Eastern Partnership, is that we relate to countries, their population, to their institutions. It is not EU’s business to have to say something on the political agenda or the one of the political parties from these countries, just as we do not do this in the case of the member state either; yet, as to the game rules, we surely have something to say,” Mogherini said.

Federica Mogherini specified that the game rules in Moldova must be 100 per cent transparent, of trust and observe the democracy and EU has ways of monitoring this process, along with the partner organizations.

The parliamentary elections in Moldova will take place on 24 February and will be held based on a mixed electoral system. Thus, 50 MPs will be elected on party lists and 51 lawmakers – in uninominal districts.
