Disabled people to be able to repair wheelchairs for free in Moldova

Chisinau, 19 February /MOLDPRES/ - A centre for the repair and assembling of wheelchairs will be established in Moldova. At the same time, specialists technicians of the Republican Experimental Centre of Prosthesis, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation (CREPOR) will benefit from a free of charge training course on the repair, adaptation and maintaining of wheelchairs.     

The initiative was made by an expert in the field of disability and inclusive education from the United Kingdom, Jane Ebel, at a meeting with the state secretary general at the Health, Labour and Social Protection Ministry, Boris Gilca.   

„This is an innovative project. I think that the partnership between the state and the civil society will bring value added and we will be able to get involved, so that each person with disabilities fully integrates into the society’s life,” Boris Gilca said.

In the context of the initiative proposed, the state secretary general gave assurances that a room would be identified at CREPOR, where disabled people will be able to appeal, at any time, to services of technical maintenance of wheelchairs. According to the Health Ministry, on the immediately next period, the CREPOR management is to have technical consultations with representatives of the United Kingdom to achieve the goals discussed at the meeting.  

According to CREPOR data, in 2018, 453 wheelchairs were distributed and this year, wheelchairs are to be distributed to another 780 people on the waiting list. Statistics data shows that more than 27,000 people move on wheelchairs in Moldova.
