Electrical interconnection with Romania to enable import, export of energy

12:36 | 12.04.2019 Category: Economic

Chisinau, 12 April /MOLDPRES/- The interconnection of the electricity networks between the Republic of Moldova and Romania will allow both the import of electricity and its export. Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici made the statement in an interview exclusively for MOLDPRES.

"We have recently talked about the electricity issue in Bucharest, and where we are going to make investments. We have discussions with the representatives of the European Investment Bank and the World Bank. We have a vision of how we make this connection that will give us access to the European electricity grid," he said.

Referring to Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline, the Minister of Economy said it was important for it to be operational by the end of this year. "Three of the seven auctions were finalized last week, another was to be signed these days and there are three more to be completed. This will allow us to be more efficient and have this functional section in as short time as possible ", he said.

Gaburici said that the gas pipeline will allow the Republic of Moldova to connect not only to Romanian gas but to a market with several gas suppliers, and this will also allow for lower tariffs.

"Priority is given to ensuring greater independence in the gas and electricity sectors. We do not want to depend on just one supplier. If we have an alternative gas source, then we will have access to a larger market and we will have different prices and we will choose the best prices, which will enable us to have lower tariffs,” he said.

The construction works of Ungheni - Chisinau pipeline started in mid-February this year.
