Campaign on fighting HIV/AIDS held in south Moldova Gagauz autonomy

Chisinau, 21 May /MOLDPRES/ - Together We Will End AIDS is the title of a social campaign held in the settlements of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri till late May. The action has become traditional in the autonomy and is aimed at promoting the sound lifestyle, procedures of testing, as well as tolerance towards people infected with HIV/AIDS.   

The campaign is organized by the regional centre, Together for Life, and is promoted by more personalities known and appreciated in the autonomy in different settlements.

The action’s agenda sees more events, especially for young people, meant to inform about everything which deals with this disease, called also “the plague of the 20th century.” According to the organizers, more charity activities to back infected children, as well as various sessions of training, publicizing and raising residents’ awareness about the risks of HIV/AIDS are planned to be carried out in the region till 31 May 2019. Also, medical testing points will be organized, with the procedures due to be carried out free of charge for all those interested and volunteers will distribute informative materials.  

The regional centre, Together for Life, provides psycho-social support to people hit by HIV/AIDS, as well as their families. The organization has been working since 2012 and covers nine districts from, according to the website www.gagauzinfo.md.  At present, 321 people infected with HIV/AIDS are registered at the centre, of whom 20 are children.   

The campaign from the Gagauz autonomy is dedicated to the day of the memory of the victims dead of AIDS. For the first time ever, this day was marked in San Francisco, the USA, in 1982 and since then, it has been annually held on the third Sunday of May.
