Euro, U.S. dollar appreciate against Moldovan leu

Chisinau, 22 August /MOLDPRES/ – In upcoming days, the cost of U.S. dollar (USD) appreciates by MDL 0.09 against Moldovan leu (MDL) up to the cost of MDL 17.88 for $1, and the European single currency (EUR) gets more expensive by MDL 0.04 up to an official price of MDL 19.79 for €1.

The new exchange rates will be valid until Tuesday, 27 August, during which the budget employees have a four – day minivacation on Independence Day.

According to official exchange rates displayed by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), the cost Romanian leu (RON) adds MDL 0.01 up to MDL 04.18 for L1. Similarly, the cost of Russian rouble (RUB) and Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH) add by MDL 0.01 each: RUB – MDL 0.27 for ₽1 and UAH – MDL 0.70 for ₴1.

According to data presented by BNM today, in July 2019, the degree of coverage of net demand for foreign currency by economic agents through net foreign currency offer from individuals constituted 96.3 per cent, compared with 103.9 per cent in June 2019. Compared to previous month, the net supply of foreign currency from natural persons increased by $19 mln (+10.4 per cent), and the net demand for foreign currency by economic agents – by $33.5 mln (+19.1 per cent).

Also, the foreign exchange market was characterised by a surplus of currency in first II decades of July, the exchange rate being on a faster appreciation trend compared to USD. Under these terms, the BNM intervened through net purchases of foreign currency in the amount of $23 mln. In the last week of the month, there was a correction of exchange rate of MDL in the sense of a slight depreciation in relation to USD, against the background of a temporary demand for foreign exchange on market.
