Chisinau, 29 August /MOLDPRES/- Moldovan wines have a new record for medals at the largest wine competition in Asia - Asia Wine Trophy 2019 held on 18-21 August in Daejeon, South Korea. Thus, the Traminer Late Harvest wine of the Fautor winery in Valul lui Traian region was awarded the Great Gold Medal. 34 more wines received gold medals. At the same time, 21 wines were awarded silver medals.

The Asia Wine Trophy contest is held under the patronage of the International Vine and Wine Organization (OIV), with over 4,000 samples from all over the world. Quality wine was appreciated by experts from 26 countries, including six tasters from Moldova.

"We are pleased to promote the most competitive product in our country - Moldovan Wine - at this competition and to attest a new record of medals. We see the opening of the Asian market for Moldovan wines and we are happy to offer support in strategic promotion on high value markets,” the director of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV), Gheorghe Arpentin, said.

The competition continued with a specialized exhibition Daejeon Wine Festival attended by 18 producers from the Republic of Moldova, gathered at the most impressive stand of the exhibition under the national wine brand Wine of Moldova. The exhibition is in its 7th edition and offers a platform for new business contacts and expansion of wine culture among consumers.

Moldovan Ambassador to South Korea with residence in Tokyo Vasile Bumacov said that the outstanding results of Moldovan wines are due to active and responsible participation of producers in such large events in Asia.

Wine industry represents 5% of total exports, playing an important role in the economy of Moldova and serving as a source of income for more than 200 thousand people. In recent years, Moldova began to export its products to quality markets in the EU and Asia, winning over 1,000 medals at international competitions.

In 2018-2019, the Republic of Moldova exported 14.1 million liters wine, by 1.8 percent less than the previous year. Its value exceeded 2.3 billion lei. In total, last year 356 thousand tons of grapes were processed and 19 million liters of wine were produced.
