President meets representatives of Academy of Sciences of Moldova

Chisinau, 11 September /MOLDPRES/ – President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, has met, on Wednesday, 11 September, with the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM), Ion Tighineanu, academicians Teodor Furdui, Alexandru Rosca, Constantin Gaindric and Eva Gudumac.

According to the presidency’s press service, during the dialogue, interlocutors have addressed more themes related to activity of academic environment in Moldova which, following the reform implemented in 2017 by prior leadership, faces multiple issues. The presidential institution did not support the reform, stressing that it would only have negative effects.

Starting from the precarious situation in which science is and following discussions with academicians, Igor Dodon has decided to launch a legislative initiative that aims to rectify the situation in this field by ensuring institutional funding of organisations in domain, restoring in structure of ASM the research centres, granting ASM some levers that allow them to carry out fully their attributions, modifying the organisational chart of the Academy as to increase transparency of decision – making process etc.

The representatives of scientific community have emphasised the importance of implementing urgently these legislative changes, so as to restore research and innovation system to normal in Moldova.

At his part, Igor Dodon, has mentioned that he will support all projects aimed at ensuring modernisation and reform of research system in Moldova. "We must promote science which is a decisive factor in development of society and Moldova," said the head of state.
