Chisinau, 10 October /MOLDPRES/ - The government will come up with an urgent intervention plan, in the wake of more traffic accidents which have occurred in Moldova on the last period. Among the actions due to be implemented, there are the toughening of the sanctions for exceeding the speed limit and for driving drunk. The decisions were announced today, after a meeting of the national council for the road traffic safety.

The state secretary at the Interior Ministry (MAI), Ianus Erhan, has said that the intervention plan would be made public. “This plan regards the measures concerning the legislation’s amendment. We will work on a draft on amendment of the Contravention Code and Criminal Code. Thus, the responsibility will be toughened for certain contraventions. It is about the infringements regarding the exceeding of the speed limit. We will come up with a string of proposals on the harshening of the punishment for those driving drunk. More proposals have been set forth on initiating certain measures, such as the special confiscation of the transport means, used by the person who is driving drunk. This is a categorical measure, which we are to discuss with the society,” Ianus Erhan said.

At the same time, the Economics and Infrastructure Ministry will make certain amendments as to the audit of roads, so that, when the latter are designed and constructed, decision-makers ensure the needed audit for guaranteeing the road traffic safety. The authorities will carry out more awareness-raising campaigns about the non-observance of the road traffic rules.

Another action regards the introduction of the compulsory classes of road traffic safety in schools. At the same time, decision-makers will make verifications at the enterprises which carry out the technical testing of transport means.

The head of the National Patrol Inspectorate, Victor Manole, said that 1,862 traffic accidents had taken place in the first nine months of 2019, in the wake of which 185 people died and 2,194 were injured.

More traffic accidents have occurred in the last two weeks, in the wake of which more people died and were injured.
