Foreign affairs minister, United Nations resident coordinator discuss Moldova-UN cooperation

Chisinau, 26 November /MOLDPRES/ - Priorities of Moldova’s development, the framework of cooperation between Moldova and the United Nations Organization (UNO) and the reform of the UN development system were among the subjects discussed at a today’s meeting between Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Aureliu Ciocoi and UN Resident Coordinator in Chisinau Simon Springett, accompanied by the heads of the UN funds and programmes, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s press service has reported.   

Minister Aureliu Ciocoi highlighted the Moldova’s sustainable priorities, stressing, in particular, the justice reform, fighting corruption and implementation of the Association Agreement, promotion of a balanced foreign policy.      

The two officials put emphasis on the assistance needs for Moldova in the economic and social sectors. In particular, they referred to such topics as gender equality, development of the health system, ensuring the human rights, improvement of the demographic situation.   

Simon Springett expressed the UN’s openness to contribute, through programmes and assistance, to the implementation of Moldova’s development agenda. In the context, he emphasized the national voluntary report on the achievement of the sustainable development goals, due to be worked out and submitted in 2020.     

Note: On 31 May 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution 72/279 on the repositioning of the UN’s development system, through which the system of the UN Resident Coordinators was reformed. Simon Springett is the first UN Resident Coordinator accredited in Moldova in last October, as a result of the aforementioned reform.
