Way of calculating pensions for women to be changed in Moldova

Chisinau, 6 December /MOLDPRES/ - The way of calculation of pensions for women will be changed in Moldova. The average monthly salary on Moldova and not the minimum one, as it has been so far, will be taken into account at establishing the quantum of pension for the non-contributory period of taking care of a child up to the age of 3 years. A draft law to this effect was adopted with the votes of 82 lawmakers in two readings today.

At present, the minimum monthly salary on the country is taken into account on the date of the pension’s calculation for the non-contributory period of taking care of a child up to the age of 3 years. According to the draft’s authors, as well as the council for the prevention of discrimination and ensuring equality, this provision disadvantages the women, perpetuating the gender differences at the quantum of pensions, as the beneficiaries of partially paid leave for taking care of the child are preponderantly mothers.

Thus, at the situation from 1 August 2019, the average pension for men stood at 2,278.65 lei and for women – 1,688.34 lei or 75 per cent of the average pension in case of men. The financial resources for covering the expenses dealing with the implementation of the new legislative norms are provided for in the state budget.

Statistics data shows that mothers prevail in the overall number of beneficiaries of partially paid leave for taking of the child. In 2018, 45,335 people benefited from monthly allowance for bringing up children: 39,667 mothers (87.49 per cent) and   5,348 fathers (11.7 per cent).
