National poet Mihai Eminescu paid homage at 170th birthday anniversary in Moldova

Chisinau, 15 January /MOLDPRES/ - National poet Mihai Eminescu today was paid homage, on the occasion of his 170th birthday anniversary. The event is part of a series of actions organized on the National Culture Day, marked in Moldova on the same day.   

Representatives of the central, local public administration, politicians, writers, culture people, admirers of Eminescu’s works, today morning laid flowers at the bust of poet Mihai Eminescu on the Alley of Classics of the Romanian Literature from the Stefan cel Mare public garden, on this occasion.  

A recital of poetry and music, as well as an action to evoke the poet’s personality, held by culture and art people, took place here too. In his speech, the deputy head of the Moldovan Writers’ Union, the moderator of the event Teo Chiriac said that Mihai Eminescu today was paid homage all over the world, anywhere where Romanians live. “The spirit of Eminescu is everywhere. His work will always be up-to-date,” Teo Chiriac said.      

For his part, writer Nicolae Dabija said that he had discovered poetry thanks to Eminescu. “His poetry seems to be written dictated by God. It is a divine poetry. His poetry will never get old. For me, Eminescu is more than just a poet,” Dabija stressed.    

In the context, the director of the Chisinau-based Mihai Eminescu Romanian Cultural Institute, Valeriu Matei, said that Eminescu was one of the greatest lyrical and philosophical poets of the world. At the same time, the president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, Ion Tighineanu, said that Eminescu was “our universe, the love with all the mysteries of this nice feeling.”     

Two exhibitions related to this anniversary were inaugurated at the House of Writers of Moldova today.

Mihai Eminescu, regarded by the posthumous literary criticism as the most important poet of the Romanian literature, was born in Botosani, Romania, on 15 January 1850. Eminescu died in Bucharest on 15 June 1889. On 28 October 1948, Mihai Eminescu was posthumously elected as member of the Romanian Academy.

The National Culture Day was established under a parliament decision from 2012, and is aimed at promoting the national culture, authentic cultural values, as well as the outstanding personalities from the culture sector.
