Resident from north-western district of Moldova manufactures masks for Venice Carnival

Chisinau, 21 February /MOLDPRES/ - A resident from the Dusmani village, north-western Glodeni district, Victor Vadavoi, has become known for his passion to manufacture masks. The Moldovan’s works are worn at the Venice Carnival this year as well. The carnival is held on the period 8-25 February, with the participation of more than three million visitors.   
 
Victor Vadavoi has been manufacturing masks for five years already, after he worked ten years in Italy, being urged by an Italian producer to make paper masks. The master can make up to 100 masks per day, depending on their dimension. “Sometimes, I sent masks to Italy each week,” Victor Vadavoi told the website www.nordnews.md.    

The artist noted that, on the domestic market, his works had not been appreciated, but were quite demanded in Italy. Nevertheless, the master is set to popularize this art in his native country and for this he plans to open a museum of masks in his home.

The idea is backed by the local authorities, who plan to include the workshop of Victor Vadavoi in the tourist itinerary Glodeni-Cobani. “It is quite good that there is such a workshop of masks, which he sells abroad, on the territory of the mayoralty. He earns money and creates jobs; this is very good,” the mayor of the Dusmani village, Petru Rusu, told www.nordnews.md.       

The Venice Carnival is an annual festival celebrated in the Venice city. The carnival ends with the beginning of the Lent at the Catholics, 40 days before the Easter, on the date of the Shrove Tuesday, one day before the Ash Wednesday. This festival is known all over the world due to its specific extravagant masks. The first documentation referring to the use of masks in Venice can be found back in the 13th century.
