Chisinau, 17 March /MOLDPRES/- The Official Journal of Moldova published on 17 March the government's decision proposing parliament to declare a state of emergency throughout the country for a period of 60 days.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held on 16 March after taking note of the report of the Commission for Emergencies on the need to declare a state of emergency in connection with the spread of the new type coronavirus COVID-19. A request to this effect was made yesterday by President Igor Dodon in an appeal to people.

Under the legislation, the state of emergency is declared at the proposal of the president or the government, as approved by parliament. The period of the state of emergency does not exceed 60 days and depending on the evolution of the situation, the head of state or government may ask parliament to extend or reduce the duration of the state of emergency, as well as to extend or narrow its area of action.

During the state of emergency, depending on the specific situation, the following measures can be applied: setting up a special regime of entry and exit from the country; rationalizing consumption of food and others, setting up the quarantine regime and other mandatory sanitary-epidemic measures; carrying out under law the requisitions of goods to prevent and eliminate consequences of situations that required the declaration of the state of emergency; establishing a special working regime for economic agents and public institutions, solving other issues on their activity, necessary for carrying out the rescue-unblocking works and so on.

Last week, the World Health Organization declared a coronavirus pandemic. In the Republic of Moldova, according to official information, there are currently 29 cases of infection with COVID-19 virus, of which 15 are of import and 14 with local transmission.

Today, the parliament is going to meet to comply with the request from president Igor Dodon and the government on state of emergency.
