Moldovan PM says confident of country's ability to improve economy, overcome complicated situation

Chisinau, 4 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu today participated, in online format, in a meeting of the Eurasian Inter-governmental Council. The event brought together the heads of government of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.     

In his speech, Ion Chicu referred to the government’s actions initiated and enforced back in the beginning of the pandemic, in order to support the national economy and contribute to the economic improvement against the background of the present crisis. As a priority, the PM stressed the development and implementation of infrastructure projects, attracting wide-scale investments in infrastructure, transport and logistic development, Moldova’s industrialization and economy’s digitalization.     

„Against the background of the current epidemiological situation, we witness a decrease in the economic activity all over the world, a weakening of the chains of production and sales, as well as a drop in the trade volume. This is a serious challenge for all states, with no exception. I am confident that we will be able to improve the economy and we will overcome this complicated situation. At the same time, being fully connected to the main priorities – improving the citizens’ well-being through ensuring a dynamic economic development, by backing the business environment, improving the quality of products and encouraging the competitiveness,’’ Ion Chicu said.    

The prime minister also touched upon the initiative on Moldova’s industrialization through the setting up of 18 industrial platforms. Chicu specified that, in this way, new jobs would be created, including for young people, and new investments would be attracted in regions.  

„We are set to create centres of excellence for the country’s industrialization. This is a very important thing for Moldova, as the platform represents an efficient instrument for regional development, especially of the economy’s industrial sector, stimulation of the entrepreneurial activity, as well as creation of new jobs for citizens of Moldova’s settlements. Therefore, the impact of investments in infrastructure will be significant in the process of implementing the concept of our country’s industrialization,’’ Ion Chicu said.    

The prime minister also said that the Moldovan cabinet paid special attention to the development of the digital economy and IT sector; this is an engine of the society’s as well as of the national economy’s modernization. In the context, Ion Chicu stressed that, among the subjects on development and cooperation with the EEU countries, there were also the ones related to the digital agenda.   

While highlighting the importance Moldova attaches to strengthening the commercial and economic relations with EEU countries, with economic and investment character, the PM emphasized the country’s openness for the development of partnerships in diverse sectors of mutual interest, such as: industry, agriculture, infrastructure projects, etc.
