EU to extend financial assistance for reform of police in Moldova

Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union will direct 21.4 million euros for the protection of the law-enforcement staff of Moldova against COVID-19.  

The parliament’s commission for foreign policy and European integration, at a today’s meeting, approved the evaluation notice on starting negotiations and approving the signing of the Addendum No 2 to the agreement on financing between the Moldovan government and the European Union on the budgetary support programme for the police reform in Moldova for 2017-2020.

Thus, under the document, EU is to redirect the current funds for budgetary support on police reform, in order to back the efforts of the law-enforcement bodies from Moldova to combat and manage the COVID-19 situation. For this, the Interior Ministry (MAI) will work out a plan on the progress made in the implementation of relevant COVID-19 measures for the law-enforcement subdivisions: General Police Inspectorate, General Inspectorate of Border Police, General Inspectorate of Carabineers. The measures due to be included in this plan will cover the needs to better protect the law-enforcement staff and the wide public against risks dealing with COVID-19. The approval and implementation of this plan conditions the providing of budgetary support worth 21.4 million euros in all.   

The agreement on financing between the Moldovan government and the European Union on the budgetary support programme for the police reform in Moldova for 2017-2020 was signed on 14 December 2016.
