Moldovan president meets European Council President

Chisinau, 28 February /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu had a meeting today with European Council President Charles Michel, the presidential press service has reported.

The European official was in Chisinau on a working visit for several hours, at the invitation of the head of state, made during visit to Brussels. The key topics of discussion were: providing our citizens with vaccines against Covid-19 and overcoming the health crisis, supporting small and medium-sized businesses in the pandemic, strengthening support for our reform agenda and overcoming the political stalemate.

The head of state thanked the President of the European Council for the sustained and sincere support of the European Union for our country and reaffirmed his commitment to build a prosperous and equitable society in the Republic of Moldova, with institutions at the service of citizens. "Your decision to visit our country is a clear signal of support from the European Union for our citizens. Thank you for being with Moldova during this difficult period. The Republic of Moldova is not alone in the face of the pandemic and this gives us hope that we will be able to return to normalcy as soon as possible ", said Maia Sandu, after the talks with Charles Michel.

The officials had a joint discussion with a team of doctors from the Republic of Moldova. "I thanked them for their dedication and sacrifice in this fight. We can stop the pandemic together with doctors and with the support of the European institutions. We need help to unblock the purchase and delivery of vaccine from manufacturing companies for Moldova, "said Maia Sandu.

During an extended meeting, the head of state discussed with President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Werner Hoyer about investment projects in Moldova that bring tangible changes in people's lives: drinking water, transport, agriculture, small business development and medium, energy efficiency. "We count on continuing to work with the EIB in areas such as energy efficiency, water supply and sewerage, supporting local entrepreneurs," said Maia Sandu.

Charles Michel reiterated the EU's support in fighting the pandemic, obtaining the vaccine and recovering the economy of the Republic of Moldova and full support for President Maia Sandu and her ambitious agenda. "It is the first visit to the Republic of Moldova - short, but very important. I am sending a clear message of support from the European Union for further reforms and the fight against corruption. The EU is a reliable partner of the Republic of Moldova. 

I reiterated the EU's solidarity in helping Moldova fight the Covid crisis and cope with socio-economic impact. We are now focusing on accelerating vaccination. But our support goes hand in hand with reforms. Fighting corruption and strengthening the rule of law are the only way forward. The very ambitious agenda of the president is the right direction, to strengthen the relationship with the EU ", said Charles Michel.

The meeting took place during the working visit that the European Union official pays to Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine on 28 February -3 March.
