Presidents of Moldova, Austria have online discussion

Chisinau, 5 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today had an online discussion with President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen. The head of state thanked for the support provided to Moldova, including for combating the pandemic, both through direct donations of protection equipment and materials and through the COVAX platform, the presidential press service has reported.

„I discussed the pandemic situation and the political developments in Moldova and I stressed that, after we have a stable and responsible government, it is important that we boost our bilateral cooperation, including on the economic and commercial dimension. President Van der Bellen showed support for the anti-corruption agenda, on strengthening the rule of law state; he emphasized that the corruption phenomenon is not only an evil in itself, but hits the economic development of a country and is a major obstacle to quality investments,’’ Maia Sandu said.  

The officials also discussed the deepening of the bilateral cooperation in such fields as the energy efficiency, environmental protection, adaptation to the climate changes and management of water resources. ‘’An important cooperation sector for us deals with the recovery of the assets stolen by some corrupt Moldovan politicians and placed in other countries, including Austria,’’ the head of state stressed.   

During the discussion, President Van der Bellen gave assurances that Austria would continue providing support for the democracy from Moldova and the reforms’ agenda and rapprochement with the European Union. ‘’I thanked Mr. President Van der Bellen for the initiative to make a visit to Austria in next autumn. At the same time, I hope that we will have occasion to meet in Chisinau as well, after the sanitary situation improves,’’ President Maia Sandu added.
