Chisinau, 2 July /MOLDPRES/- Specialists from Slovakia will participate in improving the quality of life of citizens of Rezina by ensuring access to the sewerage system. This will be due to a Moldovan-Slovak project approved for funding under the annual call of the Official Development Assistance Program of the Slovak Republic (SlovakAid).

According to the authorities, the situation of the sewerage system is a long-term problem in the Republic of Moldova. "However, this project proposal focuses on the Central Region of our country and the city of Rezina, based on data available in existing strategies and documentation," explains the Regional Development Agency (ADR) Center.

The project aims at increasing the quality of life through better access to the sewerage system in Rezina and raising awareness of the need for wastewater treatment. Investments are worth about 219 thousand euros. The works are estimated to be completed in 18 months.

The assistance will be based on support for ensuring quality infrastructure in water and sewerage - construction of part of the sewerage system in Rezina (3,390 m); collaborating with the public in this city and its immediate surroundings and raising awareness about wastewater treatment and a responsible approach to the environment. The project is an opportunity for the environment, as the built sewer connection and working with the public will allow for improved protection of soil, groundwater and the Dniester River.

This is the 5th project to be carried out jointly by ADR Center and Slovak partners from ADR Senec-Pezinok.

In the Central Region, only 10% of the population has access to sewerage (the national average is 30%). In Rezina, access to sewerage is provided only for 61% of the population, which is not enough for an urban area.

The aim of the project is to connect an additional 7.4%, which is 225 households (869 people). The city is currently building a wastewater treatment plant, the works will be completed this summer.
