Moldova remains in Tier 2 ranking on combating human trafficking,

Chisinau, 5 July /MOLDPRES/- Moldova remains in Tier 2 ranking, established by the US State Department on combating human trafficking, maintaining its position with states such as Germany, Italy and one step higher than Romania.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the US State Department recently presented the Annual Report on Trafficking in Human Beings, 2021 edition, which reflected and evaluated the measures taken by 190 states, including the Republic of Moldova, in preventing and combating modern slavery, which manifests itself in various forms, such as: sexual exploitation of women and children, trafficking in organs and materials on sexual abuse of children (child pornography).

According to the conclusions presented in the Report, the authorities of the Republic of Moldova have made impressive efforts to reach the standards in the definitive fight against human trafficking, maintaining its TIER 2 position with countries such as Germany, Italy, Denmark, Norway and Israel.

The report appreciated the maintenance in the bodies of the Prosecutor's Office of the specialized structures within the General Prosecutor's Office, of the Anti-Trafficking Offices within the PCCOCS. At the same time, the elaboration by the Prosecutor's Office of the Guide on International and National Legal Norms / Instruments in Combating Child Abuse and Sexual Exploitation with the Use of Information and Communication Technologies" was noted.

At the same time, the report contains some recommendations, including: vigorous investigation, prosecution and conviction of traffickers, including the involvement of officials in such cases; taking measures to combat corruption in the judiciary; ensuring that victims of trafficking, including children, are not unduly penalized for the illegal acts that traffickers have forced them to commit; active identification of victims of trafficking in human beings, especially children, including by examining indicators of trafficking in vulnerable populations and citizens returning to Moldova and sending victims to care facilities for assistance.
