Insufficient funding for electoral process - main challenge in 11 July elections

Chisinau, 9 July /MOLDPRES/- The main challenge in holding the snap parliamentary elections on 11 July is related to insufficient funding for the work of the electoral administration.

CEC leadership at a today's press conference presented the actions taken to organize the 11 July snap parliamentary elections. According to CEC head Dorin Cimil, the main challenge was the insufficient financing of the commission's activity.

"No amounts were provided in the national budget for the snap parliamentary elections. I asked the government for 120 million lei, of which we have got 70 million. We need another 22 million lei to pay wages of the members of the electoral constituencies, the polling stations and the technical staff ", said Cimil.

At the same time, the CEC head noted that the second challenge is that parliament has not adjusted the Electoral Code, the new amendments to the electoral legislation being voted only in the first reading. "No concrete mechanisms are adopted on settlement of electoral disputes or the organized transport of voters to the polling stations," he said.

He noted that during the election campaign, several candidates showed aggressive behavior, with only seven parties signing the electoral behavior code proposed by the CEC. "We found that no media institution signed this code of electoral conduct," Cimil said.

Referring to the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal, which reduced the number of polling stations for voters in the Transnistrian region, the official said that the central electoral administration will appeal this decision to the Supreme Court of Justice.

The snap parliamentary elections will take place on 11 July and will be followed by 1,800 national and 600 international observers. 1,791 people are running for the 101 seats in the Parliament.
