One of four deaths from Moldova related to alcohol consumption

Chisinau, 25 October /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova is on the top of the countries with the biggest consumption of alcohol per capita and one of four deaths registered in Moldova is related to the consumption of alcohol. Data to this effect was made public by specialists of the National Public Health Agency (ANSP) at a meeting with the head of the Association of the Foetal Alcohol Syndrome from France, Denis Lamblin.   

Potrivit ANSP, the subjects discussed regarded the assessment of the situation as to the consumption of alcohol, risks of its consumption on the period of pregnancy and joining joint efforts at the level of country, as well as internationally as concerns the carrying out of cost efficient interventions, in order to reduce the risks triggered by alcohol.  

At the meeting, the ANSP noted the achievements in the field of alcohol control, cooperation between various authorities, normative framework in the sector, principal challenges and actions which are to be undertaken by Moldova, in order to reduce the risks related to the consumption of alcohol, especially among young people and women of fertile age.

For his part, Denis Lamblin referred to the social, medical and individual effects of the disturbances dealing with the consumption of alcohol on the pregnancy period on the health of children, family and society, to the situation in France and the necessity to join inter-sectoral efforts internationally, in order to prevent these disturbances and promote the giving up of alcohol on the pregnancy period.   

According to official statistics, Moldova is on top of the countries with the biggest consumption of alcohol per head in the world, 12.9 litres. As for the consumption preferences, wine remains the most consumed alcoholic drinks (including for women), followed by bier. In the rural regions, people consume preponderantly wine and strong alcoholic drinks – in the urban settlements. The bier is consumed mostly by young people with ages between 15 and 19 years. At the same time, 26.1 per cent of the deaths are related to the consumption of alcohol in Moldova.
