Chisinau, 22 November/ MOLDPRES / - Agroecology is the solution for more sustainable food systems that work better for people and the environment. This is the general conclusion of the Conference Agroecology: an opportunity for agriculture and resilient food systems, held on the occasion of World Food Day.

The event is part of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Campaign to raise awareness of the importance of food systems and agroecology, in the framework of the National Dialogues on Food Systems and in the context of the UN Food Systems Summit.

"The use of agro-ecological practices demonstrates a positive effect on the environment, biodiversity, farmers' incomes, as well as on adaptation to climate change. Thus, the Conference wants to bring to the attention of farmers and the general public, the benefits of agroecology in building a sustainable food system through the 10 elements of agroecology launched by FAO ", said at the conference FAO Deputy Representative in Moldova, Tudor Robu.

Sergiu Gherciu, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAFI), stressed that agroecology is the guarantee for an efficient agriculture, which provides farmers in rural areas with a stable fruit and a better economic situation. "Through these practices, we will be more protective of the environment, and more rational in the use of natural resources. Therefore, we will make every effort to create the necessary framework of policies and strategies, so that organic farming can be practiced on a large scale to have better food systems, "said the official.

Food systems include several stages, such as: processing, handling, distribution, consumption and disposal of waste, each with an impact on the environment and people, often negatively, causing water shortages, air pollution, unhealthy diets and rural poverty. Due to agroecology, food systems can be changed for the better, guaranteeing food security at national level, by increasing resistance to environmental risks, as well as increasing incomes in the agricultural sector.

On 12 November -31 December FAO Moldova is conducting an Awareness Campaign on the importance of food systems and agroecology, in the framework of the National Dialogues on Food Systems and in the context of the UN Food Systems Summit.
