Chisinau, 1 Dec. / MOLDPRES /- Today is the national day of Romania. December 1 marks the 103rd anniversary of the Union of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș with Romania.

December 1 was proclaimed Romania's National Day in 1990, being marked for the first time in the same year in Alba Iulia. Since then, every year, both in Bucharest and in most cities across the country, military parades take place and numerous ceremonies are organized, including the laying of wreaths and other events. In 2020, due to the pandemic, such events were canceled.

This year, the military parade will take place in the Arc de Triomphe Square in Bucharest. The ceremony will take place in a small format.

Until 1989, Romania's National Day was on August 23. Then was the Day of the Anti-Fascist Armed Insurrection, with reference to the return of weapons against Nazi Germany and the arrest of the government led by Ion Antonescu in 1944. And before that date, Romania's National Day was celebrated on May 10, to mark the proclamation of state independence. Romania, but also the transformation of the United Romanian Principalities into the Kingdom of Romania.

The choice of December 1 is related to the Union of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș with Romania, in 1918, respectively, to the Proclamation of Alba Iulia. December 1, 1918 crowns the struggle of the Transylvanian Romanians for National Unity and marks the moment of the creation of Greater Romania, being a continuation of the previous unionist actions in Bessarabia (March 27, 1918) and Bukovina (November 15/28, 1918).

Romania was the first state to recognize the independence of the Republic of Moldova, only a few hours after the proclamation of independence (August 27, 1991). Diplomatic relations, at embassy level, were established on August 29, 1991. The Romanian Embassy was the first diplomatic mission opened by a state in the capital of the Republic of Moldova (it started its activity on January 20, 1992). Until June 1993 it was run at the level of a.i. The first Romanian ambassador was accredited in Chisinau in June 1993. The first ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Bucharest was accredited in January 1992.

Romania has been the main trading partner of the Republic of Moldova since 2014. According to the Ministry of Economy, the volume of foreign trade of the Republic of Moldova with Romania in 2020 amounted to 1338.249 million US dollars (-16.7% compared to 2019). "In the 30 years since the establishment of bilateral relations, the cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Romania has seen ups and downs. During all this time, several large-scale strategic projects were implemented, including the construction of the Iasi-Chisinau gas pipeline, the renovation of kindergartens and cultural buildings, the creation of the SMURD program and the provision of aid in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic", Daniel Ioniță, the Romanian ambassador to Chisinau, declared in an interview given to the" Free Europe "radio station.
