Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu conveyed a message on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the MAEIE press service has reported.

The message reads:

"Today reminds us of one of the darkest tabs in European history, which remains a deep wound for all humanity.

Although 77 years have passed since the Holocaust - this tragic episode in history, the international community and we here in the Republic of Moldova keep alive the memory of the victims of that cataclysm unparalleled in human history.

Today, all our compassion goes out to the survivors of this horrific crime against humanity, to their descendants and their relatives. Our moral responsibility, of all, is to educate society in the spirit of humanistic values, fundamental human rights and freedoms, tolerance and non-discrimination, the fight against anti-Semitism and other forms of xenophobia. Cultivating the memory of the Holocaust as well as the memory of all the victims of totalitarian regimes is a duty of democratic societies.

Over the last 7 years, Moldova has made significant progress in Holocaust education, research and commemoration. Our commitment was demonstrated by the adoption of clear policy documents, taking the form of sequential action plans to promote Holocaust memory and a culture of tolerance to combat racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. In this regard, concrete results have been achieved in the field of education, historical research and strengthening the internal legal framework.

Moldova was among the first states to officially accept, through a Government decision in 2019, the working definition of anti-Semitism adopted by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

On this day, paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, I would like to emphasize that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration will continue to promote through diplomatic instruments the strengthening of the national or international framework for preventing and sanctioning anti-Semitism and other manifestations of racism, xenophobia, racial discrimination or intolerance ”.
