Two border policemen detained after raids made at Leuseni border checkpoint of Moldova

Chisinau, 8 February /MOLDPRES/ - The Internal Protection and Anticorruption Service (SPIA) of the Interior Ministry (MAI), jointly with employees of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office today morning made 21 searches at the job offices, homes and transport means of two Border Police and three Customs Service employees, suspected of active corruption and passive corruption. Following the raids, three Customs Service employees and two border policemen were detained.   

According to MAI’s SPIA, the documentation actions took place on the period October 2021 – February 2022, with more employees of the law-enforcement bodies from the Leuseni border crossing point regarded; nine employees of MAI’s General Inspectorate of Border Police were documented for the committing of 64 corruption actions (the sums received varied between 10 and 200 euros), as well as 3 employees of the Customs Service for the committing of 26 corruption actions ( the sums received oscillated between 50 and 200 euros).    

The Leuseni employees were extorting money from carriers of passengers and parcels born in Moldova, who do not have licence for providing these services, in order to favour the passage of the vehicles without customs control or, as case may be, the carrying out of a superficial control of trucks and touring cars loaded with goods and parcels through the apparatus of scanning with X-Ray; from Moldova’s citizens with biometric passports, in order to allow the crossing of the border to European states, to allow them moving to Moldova without imposing sanctions against them for exceeding the period of stay in the European Union; from resident and non-resident private people, for favouring the crossing of the state border, in the context of the restrictions imposed by the epidemiological situation.  

Mobile phones and financial means were detected and raised within searches.
