Senior EU officials visited MoldExpo's refugee center

Chisinau, March 3 / MOLDPRES /- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi visited the MoldExpo Refugee Sorting Center today.

The two European officials were met by the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban, who outlined the main areas of activity of the center. "The center provides for the placement of Ukrainian refugees and provides the necessary social and medical assistance. In the last 24 hours, we have placed 1,775 people in the centers of the capital. At the moment, there are about a thousand people here, including 580 children. In total, since the beginning of the wave of refugees, we have provided assistance to 6,655 people ", said Ceban.

At the same time, the mayor of the capital mentioned that the municipality needs to identify several spaces for accommodation of refugees, in order not to activate accommodation in schools.

For his part, Josep Borrell expressed the readiness of the European institutions to provide assistance to the Moldovan state and specified that the Republic of Moldova will receive 15 million euros to meet the needs. "We thank the Moldovan authorities for their responsibility and organization in managing the flow of refugees. It is time for the states to call for a ceasefire in Ukraine, "the European official said.

The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, also specified that the EU will provide another 5 million euros that can be activated by the Moldovan authorities through the European protection mechanism. "The EU will continue to support the heroic work you are doing, we will help you host these people," said Olivér Várhelyi.

On 24 February-3 March 136,386 Ukrainian citizens entered the territory of the Republic of Moldova, of which 74,816 left our country.
