Chisinau, 25 March /MOLDPRES/ - The United Nations Refugee Agency and the World Food Programme will provide financial support to refugees from Ukraine and the Moldovan families which hosted more than two refugees.

At a today’s news conference, the acting representative of the UN Refugee Agency, Francesca Bonelli, informed that the institution which she represents would provide monthly financial support worth 2,200 lei to all elderly refugees, refugees with children, needy refugees and those with vulnerabilities. To benefit from this monthly financial support, the refugees will have to register at the placement centres or mobile centres due to move in Moldova.

The money could be taken in cash or through bank cards, due to be provided to refugees. The UN Refugee Agency estimated a sum of 49 million dollars for the payment of this financial support for the first six months.

For his part, the representative of the World Food Programme in Moldova, Cesar V. Arroyo, said that the families of the Moldovans which had sheltered more than two refugees in their homes would receive one-off financial support worth 3,500 lei. The money could be received through Western Union or through a commercial bank from Moldova.

Arroyo noted that this assistance would be provided after the identification of all families which host refugees. The process of identification will start on 28 March. The UN official also said that the World Food Programme had at its disposal 7-8 million dollars, in order to make this one-off aid possible.

There are about 100,000 refugees from Ukraine in Moldova, of whom a half are children. A number of 4,600 refugees are accommodated in those 96 placement centres meant for them.
