Moldovan parliament speaker meets European MP on behalf of Bulgaria

Chisinau, 18 April /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with a member of the European Parliament on behalf of Bulgaria, Andrey Novakov. The officials discussed the security in the region, Moldova’s European integration agenda, the situation of the Bulgarian community from Moldova, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.   

Igor Grosu informed about the actions undertaken by the Moldovan authorities for the good management of the humanitarian situation in Moldova, emerged because of the war in Ukraine. ‘’The unjustified war started by Russia triggered a big flow of refugees. We host almost 100,000 citizens from the neighbor country – a number equal to 4 per cent of Moldova’s population. We make efforts to help them overcome this tragedy and we will continue to do this with all responsibility,’’ the parliament speaker said.    

Igor Grosu also said that, in the conditions of the refugees’ crisis and the energy one, there was a big pressure on the economic, social and medical systems of Moldova. In this respect, the speaker thanked the European partners, including the Bulgarian state, for the assistance provided.    

Igor Grosu noted that Moldova was in the process of filling in the questionnaire received on behalf of the European Union, noting that this was an important stage towards getting the status of candidate country.   

At the same time, the MPs tackled the subject of the Bulgarian community from Moldova, as well as the boosting of the inter-parliamentary cooperation. Sides referred to a memorandum of understanding with the European Parliament, signed in Brussels in last autumn. The document provides additional opportunities of cooperation.

Attending the meeting were the head of the parliament’s commission for human rights and inter-ethnic relations, Grigore Novac, the deputy head of this commission, Natalia Davidovici and the deputy head of the commission for foreign policy and European integration, Ion Groza.
