Moldova needs massive support - UN Secretary-General says

Chisinau, May 10 / MOLDPRES /- Moldova needs massive support from the international community. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the statement after visiting the Ukrainian Refugee Accommodation Center at Moldexpo.

The UN official is on a two-day visit to the Republic of Moldova, during which time he had meetings with the country's top leadership. This morning, the UN Secretary-General visited the Ukrainian Refugee Accommodation Center at Moldexpo, where he spoke for two hours with the centre's staff and some of the refugees. He inspected the places where the refugees are housed and was interested in their requests.

"Moldovans have opened their borders their hearts and homes with great generosity, and over 90 percent of refugees live in families here. And even if the economic situation is difficult, you are generous. I strongly urge the international community to give massive support to Moldova, which needs major financial support. The country has a very complicated economic situation, food, fuel and energy prices have risen dramatically. Moldova is facing economic problems and receiving such a large number of refugees urgently needs help, "the official said.

Currently, there are about 90 thousand refugees in Moldova, of which more than half are children.
