Moldovan head of state, European Commissioner for Home Affairs discuss authorities' efforts to cope with challenges

Chisinau, 12 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today met European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, on a working visit to Chisinau, the presidential press service has reported.  

The officials referred to the security situation in the region, emerged in the wake of the Russian military aggression in Ukraine and the wave of refugees triggered by this war.  

The head of state said that, for Moldova, it was important to help the refugees in continuation, all those who need shelter.  

For her part, Commissioner Ylva Johansson said the solidarity of the Moldovan citizens in this situation was unprecedented and deserved every appreciation.   

The discussions were also focused on the Moldovan authorities’ effort to cope with the new challenges – actions of strengthening the border, increase in the number of border policemen and policemen involved in ensuring the public order, institutions’ mobilization to provide the best conditions for the refugees.  

In the context, President Maia Sandu thanked EU for quick detaching of FRONTEX officers and other experts who work together with the border police, for the assistance provided by the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) to refugees and for the measures of their relocation in European Union countries.   

„The safety and security of Moldova’s citizens remain priority. I appreciate the involvement and devotion proved by the employees of various structure of the law-enforcement bodies on this period,’’ the head of state said.
