Chisinau, 18 June /MOLDPRES/ - A joint meeting of the parliaments of Moldova and Romania took place in Chisinau today. In the end of the event, the lawmakers adopted a Joint Declaration and gave a news conference.

President of Moldova Maia Sandu welcomed the MPs. ‘’The joint meeting of the two parliaments logically and naturally fits into the ascendant relation between Moldova and Romania, re-launched in late 2020. I am confident that the today’s event will boost the cooperation between Chisinau and Bucharest for new projects on infrastructure, on consolidation of the energy independence or on modernization of the local communities,’’ the head of state said.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu stressed that, through the today’s event, a new instrument was launched and namely the format of the joint meetings of the two parliaments, which is confirmed through the signing of the Joint Declaration. ‘’Besides the symbolism of this event, I would like this platform to serve as benchmark for the guiding of the Moldovan parliament in the process of negotiation of the accession to EU. The citizens should feel in their daily life what we put down in acts and laws. A better, happy life, here, at home,’’ Grosu said.

President of Romania’s Senate Florin-Vasile Citu highlighted the significance of the moment when the joint meeting of the two parliaments takes place – one day after the European Commission made a recommendation backing the status of candidate for the European Union: ‘’This is an event with a strong symbolical content, which proves the unprecedented openness of the relations between our countries, the commitment to set a higher level of ambitions and the firm support of Romania for Moldova’s European aspirations.’’

The joint meeting ended with the adoption of the Joint declaration.

In the end of the meeting, the parliament speakers of Moldova and Romania held a news conference. At the event, President of Romania’s Senate Florin-Vasile Citu said that Moldova must be member of the European Union and Romania would back the integration process and would provide support on the period of pre-accession.
