Chisinau, 30 June /MOLDPRES/ - The refugees from Ukraine monthly benefit from a financial support worth 2,200 lei (about 100 euros) for each family member. The assistance is provided by the United Nations Refugee Agency (Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR) in Moldova.

At a news conference, the representative of the UN Refugee Agency in Chisinau, Francesca Bonelli, said that the financial assistance can be spent only in Moldova. ‘’We ruled to provide this support, so that the refugees are able to buy essential things. The sum is offered for each family member, both for adults and for the children of any age. Presently, we monitor both the situation of refugees from the placement centres and of the ones hosted by families. If necessary, we intervene and provide the assistance demanded,’’ Francesca Bonelli noted.

The UNHCR representative in Moldova presented the actions undertaken since the beginning of the war in Ukraine to back the refugees. ‘’The Agency coordinates its activities with Moldova’s government. We undertook concrete measures, in order to provide psychological support to refugees; we gave them food and essential products; a green line was established for calling and a website was created for assistance. At the same time, we help refugees to safely reach the EU countries. Many people who remained in the country were helped to get employed, children to go to kindergartens and schools. Refugees feel in safety here. Presently, the situation is stable, but we should prepare, if their flow grows,’’ Francesca Bonelli said.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, more than 500,000 refugees crossed Moldova’s border and over 82,000 chose to remain in the country. Over 45 per cent out of all refugees are children and the rest are women.
