European Union donates batch of antibacterial air purifying equipment for public transport from Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 18 July /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union today donated to the Chisinau City Hall the first batch of antibacterial air purifying equipment, which will enhance the safety of passengers in the Chisinau public transport.

The devices were purchased by the European Union in the framework of the project ‘’MOVE IT like Lublin’’ for the modernization of the municipality’s public transport. The antibacterial air purifying equipment will absorb the air from the public transport, will purify it through a bactericidal lamp and will eliminate it in a pure form. The antibacterial equipment is to be set at a height of 2 metres.   

Attending the event, Head of the European Union’s Delegation in Moldova Jānis Mažeiks stressed that the donation would contribute to a better safety of the people who use buses and trolley buses in the Moldovan capital. ‘’Presently, an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases is recorded; therefore, the today’s help is extremely valuable. At the same time, within the project, we plan to create a traffic monitoring centre, to develop an urban plan, to implement electronic tickets and develop a web application for the public transport. This project brings practices from EU here, to Chisinau,’’ the ambassador said.   

The Chisinau general mayor, Ion Ceban, thanked the European partners for the assistance provided. ‘’Within the project, more than 400 transport units will be endowed with antibacterial air purifying equipment. This fact is quite welcome, especially in the context of a new wave of coronavirus; thus, we will be able to minimize the risks of infection. The air purifying equipment will improve the public health and the quality of transport in Chisinau, providing safe travels to all residents of the city,’’ the mayor said.    

The project, MOVE IT like Lublin, sees a grant of 3.3 million euros, provided by the European Union. The initiative is implemented by the Chisinau City Hall, jointly with the Lublin city of Poland.
